Sunday 5 July 2020 was the scheduled Queensland Camellia Society Annual Show and Sale at the Auditorium at the Mt Coottha Botanic Gardens.
As previously advised, restriction and timings regarding Covid -19 has meant that the show has been cancelled – called some weeks ago as uncertainty reigned supreme.
The QCS Show certainly plans to come back in 2021.

Meanwhile, many people who look forward to adding to their camellia collection at this show have been satisfying their need – buying direct from Camellia Glen.

Camellia Glen, in Palmwoods, has been supplying camellia plants for the QCS Show for many years and is open to the public again this Saturday 4 July 2020 – 8.00am to 3.00pm. An advantage of visiting direct is that there will be a vastly larger range of varieties available – from sasanquas, japonicas, hybrids, etc.

With many changes happening around gardening events and shows, we are updating our schedule on the run. This is pretty much the same as our last update. Please note that we do not accept eftpos, and please byo carry bags. We have some pretty good stock – remember our 5 big camellia shows have been cancelled. As usual we will run out of some varieties.

UPDATE – our scheduled day to be open – Friday 12 June 2020 – is cancelled. Due to unscheduled but necessary works, we are not available Friday. Although the work will not be completed, we will be available Saturday 13 June – 8.00 to 3.00

The following week – Friday 19 and Saturday 20 – is also cancelled due to unscheduled, but also necessary, surgery.

Our apologies, but somethings just have to happen.

After this, we will revert to the plan – with just one of us available for a while.

With most of our Garden Shows and Camellia Shows cancelled this season, we are getting lots of enquiries and lots of visits from folk wanting camellias.

As indicated in earlier posts, we do have a number of days when we open the garden and nursery to the public. This gives folk an opportunity to see our camellias in flower in our garden and to buy some for theirs. So in response to some current enquiries, we are repeating details of upcoming days when the public can visit.

Camellias – and Garden – Open to the Public

It’s getting cooler and the camellias are flowering. What a great time of the year for the camellia fancier. Sasanquas have been flowering for a few weeks now with some still to come – and the early japonicas are showing lots of blooms.

Our ‘open days’ are not fancy affairs – it just means that folk can visit and see the camellias – and the magnolias and Vireya rhododendron and azaleas and others things – in flower. You can wander our garden and perhaps buy some for yours.

We do have arguably the largest range of camellias around here but we often do not have large numbers of the 200 or so different varieties that we have available. We don’t grow every variety in the gallery every season. The ‘early birds’ get the pick of the camellias. Our open days as listed in our February 2020 post are still current. All the shows listed are cancelled except for the Queensland Garden Expo which has been postponed until September – so we will be open here those days instead. As usual, the health controls are in play and we ask people to be patient. We do not usually get more than a couple of visitors at a time which suits us nicely.

We have spent some time over the past weeks fertilising our garden camellias with an organic fertiliser, horse manure and mulch. I know we say that fertilising should be done well before now – but well, if you haven’t done it when you should have, then now is the next best time. We have regularly followed this regime with good results. Now for some rain ….. please.

Come and visit, our 400 garden camellias are looking great. We are open Friday and Saturday 15 and 16 May – and for the next few. Other times, please just give us a call.

Camellias – we have sasanquas for full sun and part shade and japonicas and hybrids for the shady places.

What now? Camellias – and how to get some

Well – we are a few weeks into Covid-19 isolation – lock down – and it seems to be working for the majority of Australians. New cases are down and thankfully the death toll in this country is low.

One good thing about self isolation when one has a big garden, or like us and has a plant nursery in the backyard, there is plenty to do. The sasanqua camellias have been flowering for a few weeks with more coming into flower daily. The nursery plants are looking great – nice and green foliage, many with flowers and buds.

It is unfortunate that many of the plant/garden shows that we attend with our camellias have been cancelled this year. Maleny Garden Club Gardening on the Edge, Toowoomba Camellia Show, Queensland Camellia Society Show at Mt Coottha and possibly more.

The nursery industry – retail and grower nurseries continue to operate. Many folk are taking this opportunity to get into the garden – so it is important that supply is maintained. We continue to be open – see the schedule in our previous posts – but with strict restrictions as to the 1.5m rule (6ft in the USA), limiting customers numbers to two at a time (not usually an issue for us), BYO carry bags and PYO (pack your own), and limiting time spent with each customer. (Not that we don’t like you – it’s just one of the rules laid down at the moment). Please keep in mind local travel restrictions.

So get your camellia fix, and get it now. We will be available by arrangement over the Easter weekend (we aren’t going anywhere – now). It is likely that we will selling from here only this season.

‘Open Days’ 2020 at Camellia Glen’

It looks like it is camellia season again in South East Queensland. The plants are looking great and we are just about ready for it. We are getting lots of enquiries as to when we are having our ‘open days’ and we are getting people visiting – by arrangement. We continue to be available by arrangement – we just ask call first to make a time – 07 54450333.

So we have set a timetable for our open days for 2020. These need to fit around other events – and allow ourselves preparation time and breathing space.

So – 2020 ….

Our open days are simple – come and wander the garden and see our 400 odd camellias in various stages of flowering (they don’t all flower at the same time), there are azaleas, some Vireya rhododendrons, magnolias and michelias (although they are all called magnolia these days), and other bits and pieces. We can answer your questions regarding camellias for your garden and assist with your selection process. We will have camellias – sasanquas, japonicas, reticulatas (limited), hybrids – available for sale. We don’t have every variety in our photo gallery every season. All plants are propagated and grown on site.

‘Open days’ are 8.00am to 3.00pm.

Please bring your own bags/boxes/cartons to carry home your purchases – we don’t provide these.

Summer Rain – and Camellia Care

As usual, after a hot and dry start to our summer, we have now had some rain. Over 500mm here over the past week week or so and the garden plants are loving it. It is still hot, and humid, and with the occasional shower of rain. The grass is growing and the weeds have gone nuts – and the camellias, and everything else in the garden, are growing.

Most of the sasanquas are in bud with the occasional flower and japonicas are starting to bud but also putting on growth.

It’s not too late to fertilise if you have not done that but a fertiliser high in Phosphorus and Potassium will be better at this time of the year (mid summer). If you use a nitrogen rich fertiliser now, it will encourage the plants to put on growth – which is ok, but right now we are looking for flower development.

Mulch.

Don’t prune unless you absolutely have to as this will cut off flower buds and this season’s flowering wood.

Look for aphids in new growth – these will distort and damage new growth. Loopers and caterpillars will like getting into those new growth guard leaves – and these will chew through the juicy new shoots. Squish them.

Thinking of other jobs to do, don’t prune now unless it is absolutely necessary – you will cut off flower buds and all the flowering wood for this season. Re-label your plants – especially if you want to keep track of what you have (mandatory if you want to enter them into shows and bloom comps). Most labels will deteriorate and if the labels don’t then the little twist ties will. In our opinion, twist ties should not be left on the plant – ever. Small cable ties are great (these are ‘one use only’ as you have to cut them off but they are cheap), I’ve seen cattle ear tags used effectively (in Brittany in France), but best of all is a 30cm square of granite with a 45 degree angled top and engraved – although this option can be costly – apparently.

Anyway, get out in the garden, and get your hands dirty. Researchers are saying dirt and the accompanying microorganisms are beneficial.
